Opening of British Corner

On February 27, 2015 the founder of the English-Speaking Union of Georgia and the President of the ESU International Council, Marina Tsitsishvili, with the support of ESU-Georgia, set up British Corner, British-Georgian Cultural Centre. The British Ambassador to Georgia, HE Alexandra Hall Hall and Marina Tsitsishvili cut the red ribbon stretched at the entrance of the brand new language centre located in the top corner of Vake Park (the main park in Tbilisi), opening up the way to English education for future generations. It's a place not only for teaching English but introducing British culture and British traditions.

As the Ambassador had stated: "I am so proud and happy to be here at the opening of British Corner; I'm sure that it's going to be a magical place where people can meet their friends, have a cup of tea, read Shakespeare, listen to music, allow their imagination to expand and also to learn the English language and everything about Britain, which can be great and which can be shared with all of Georgia."

Remembrance day. Every year since the end of the First World War, Armistice Day has been observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states to commemorate the lives of servicemen who died. Remembrance is symbolized by the wearing of a poppy. More than 60 000 Georgian soldiers also served in the First World War. Every year British Corner  honours those soldiers and others since then who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

The Remembrance Day was held at British Corner. Our esteemed guest Lt Col Dave Ethell, Defence Attaché to Georgia, Armenia & Azerbaijan, gave a presentation to our students explaining the significance of the poppy and why remembrance is important.

Public Speaking Competition. Every year since its inception in 1998, ESU-Georgia organises a Public Speaking Competition in Tbilisi, and this year it was held at the British-Georgian Cultural Center known as the British Corner. International versions of this contest are held in numerous countries across the world; approximately 1,000, 000 young people aged 16-20 take part in them annually and the best speakers are sent to London to take part in the finals. The main purpose of the ESU International Public Speaking Competition in London is to bring together some of the world’s best speakers.
